Proudly Supporting all Military Families with a Special Needs Dependent
Fantastic news yesterday for our military families! The U.S. House of Representatives approved a bipartisan amendment to the FY 2013 National Defense Authorization Act that will improve medical coverage for military families caring for dependents with autism!
The amendment greatly improves coverage of autism care for dependents of Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force retirees, provides for consistent services of eligible Guard/Reserve families, and removes an arbitrary financial cap on care currently limiting treatments that military dependents with autism may receive. This amendment puts ABA therapy under TRICARE basic as “medical care,” rather than the ECHO benefit, which is classified as “special education.”
This is a massive step forward in the long process of making change for our special needs families within in the military! This will help over 32,000 military families with a dependent with Autism! That is a LOT of people that this will help! We need to celebrate this and commend our very special Caring for Military Kids Autism Act (CMKAA) advocates for working so hard to push this through.
We all know that ABA therapy is beneficial to many other disabilities, and this House approval today is the first step in the right direction. The awesome advocates that championed this bill have done a phenomenal job and the Military Special Needs Network thanks them for their amazing activism. And thank you to Congress for addressing the medical needs of so many of our military families! Stay tuned as the bill moves to the Senate.
It's serious. It's sarcastic. It's sweet. It's sincere.
