Proudly Supporting all Military Families with a Special Needs Dependent
Introducing Kirstin Horne, Air Force spouse, currently stationed at MacDill AFB in Florida. Kirstin has been married for almost 16 years. Her favorite part of being a military spouse is the moving and seeing new places! She loves to live in a new location and really spend the time to see and do all that is there. Unfortunately, she says, being on EFMP has limited them but her best advice to a new special needs parent is to flower where you are planted always. “It may not be the exotic adventure you originally anticipated but each new location can be its own adventure. Don’t let the “special need” limit you or your family… do what you can and enjoy every minute.”
Kirstin’s son is almost 13 years old. He has Angelman Syndrome which is a deletion on the 15th chromosome. The 4 main characteristics are global developmental delay, lack of verbal speech, seizures, and a happy disposition. Her son is also physically impaired requiring assistance to walk or the use of a wheelchair. Not only is he in full time special education with PT, OT, SLP and a one on one aide, he also receives all therapies outside of school plus a plethora of pediatric specialists. These include neurology, urology, gastroenterology, pulmonology, orthopedics, the need for AFO’s and more! Needless to say he qualifies for EFMP based on his severe medical, physical, and cognitive needs. She recently saw a t-shirt for Angelman Syndrome that said “If you think my hands are full… you should see my heart!” And that says it all. 😉
The Military Special Needs Network honors and salutes Kirstin Horne as the Military Spouse of the Day! We thank you for being such a wonderful military spouse and an amazing advocate.
