Proudly Supporting all Military Families with a Special Needs Dependent

May 19, 2012: Honoring Mary Andrews – Military Spouse of the Day!

Mary is a Submariner wife stationed at Navy Base Kitsap, Washington. She and her Sailor have been married for eleven years.

The pride Mary feels for her husband and the career he chose because he truly believes in it is one of her favorite parts of being a military spouse. “It’s so hard on our entire family sometimes, but we know that we are part of something amazing and that keeps us going.”  She also says that “the homecomings after even the smallest of deployments are also super sweet.”

If she could go back and give herself one piece of advice before becoming a military spouse, Mary said she would tell herself to “keep something all to yourself.  Whether it’s work, school, exercise, sewing, whatever is important. Don’t completely lose yourself in whatever labels others want to give you.”

Mary is an terrific advocate for special needs.  She says, “Parents need to be reminded when they are at their most vulnerable that they know what is best for their child. Yes, they should educate themselves, and surround themselves with educated people to help their child. However, never, ever substitute someone else’s judgment for your own, especially when it comes to your child. I’ve done it before, and I would like to be able to prevent any other parent from going through what my son and I went through.”

The Military Special Needs Network honors and salutes Mary Andrews as the Military Spouse of the Day! We thank you for being such a wonderful military spouse and an amazing advocate for special needs!
